The S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (XEJ) plummeted 1.93 per cent to 10,392.40 points on August 5th, making it the market's worst performer.

This downturn came as oil prices dropped below US$80 a barrel, led by Brent crude trading at around US$76 a barrel.

As a result, sector heavyweights Woodside Energy declined 2.96 per cent, Santos fell 1.93 per cent, Karoon Energy dropped 2.72 per cent, and Beach Energy lost 2.19 per cent.

This sharp decline in the energy index highlights how a single commodity move can significantly impact an entire sector's performance.
