Energy Markets Signal Winter Crisis as Diesel Prices Soar Past $200
The energy market is signaling a winter crisis and rising interest rates due to the ongoing Iran conflict. The prices of diesel and natural gas are climbing faster than Brent crude futures, which surged above $100 this week.
Diesel futures in some parts of the world are north of $200 a barrel, with taxes making it over $300 for consumers. Europe's natural gas prices have hit their highest since late 2022, with inventories remaining thin before winter.
The European Central Bank has highlighted higher oil and gas prices as one of the potential risks pushing its inflation forecasts higher in the coming months. ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that refining margins are now a critical factor in setting interest rates.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey also emphasized the importance of crack spreads, which add to price pressures. Markets expect two increases in interest rates by February to tackle inflation.
