Energy Price Surge Threatens to Unleash New Wave of Inflation in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Rising energy prices on global markets are sending shockwaves through Bosnia and Herzegovina, where citizens are already struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

Energy experts warn that fuel prices at gas stations could soon reach four marks per liter if oil prices continue to rise, while consumer associations expect electricity prices to increase after the elections.

Pensioners, who receive an average monthly pension of around 900 marks in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and 700 marks in Republika Srpska, are particularly hard hit by the rising prices. The damage caused by drought has also had a significant impact on agricultural production, leading to further increases in food prices.

Jovan Vasilić, president of the Zvono Consumer Association, believes that any significant increase in electricity prices will only come after the elections. Energy expert Almir Bečarević warns that developments on international energy markets could have a direct impact on consumers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, citing a 310% rise in natural gas prices since February.
