Energy Stocks Skyrocket on Middle East Tensions and US Crude Stockpile Drop
The energy sector experienced a significant surge in stocks after renewed fighting across the Middle East and a larger-than-expected drop in U.S. crude stockpiles reinforced concerns over oil supply.
Crude oil futures jumped more than 6% as the conflict between Iran and the U.S. escalated, with Iran carrying out a missile attack on a U.S. base and firing on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) reported that commercial crude oil inventories in the United States fell by 3.3 million barrels in the week ending July 24, signaling tightness in the domestic market and putting upward pressure on prices.
A number of stocks jumped in response to these developments, including Crescent Energy (NYSE:CRGY), Northern Oil and Gas (NYSE:NOG), HighPeak Energy (NASDAQ:HPK), Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), and Matador Resources (NYSE:MTDR).
