Eni and TotalEnergies have greenlit the Cronos gas project offshore Cyprus, marking Eni's first sanctioned production project in Cypriot waters. This development involves a trans-boundary subsea tieback that crosses two exclusive economic zones.

The Cronos project targets an estimated three trillion cubic feet of gas, with a planned production rate of approximately 500 million standard cubic feet per day.

The four subsea wells will connect via pipeline to the nearby Zohr field on the Egyptian side of the EEZ boundary. From there, the gas will be sent southward for processing and liquefaction at the Damietta LNG terminal in Egypt.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne commented that this new gas route in the Mediterranean will contribute to Europe's energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources.
