Enstar Secures LNG Transport for Whittier Gas Restoration
A pipeline failure in Whittier, Alaska forced Enstar Natural Gas Company to temporarily shut off natural gas service for about 250 residents due to a leak detected on August 9. The company secured a temporary supply of liquefied natural gas and specialized equipment from Edmonton, Alberta.
The equipment was transported over 2,000 miles from Canada to Alaska, arriving in Portage on Thursday and being connected to the line supplying Whittier on Friday. Crew members were able to restore natural gas service to all customers by Sunday.
Enstar spokeswoman Harley Hedlund described the response as 'extraordinary,' citing the coordination between Enstar, the City of Whittier, and state and federal partners to quickly restore gas service. Permanent repairs to the pipeline are expected to wrap up by mid-September.
