Equinor, a Norwegian energy company, has linked its Tanzanian gas project to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. At an energy conference in Norway on August 25, 2026, Equinor's executive vice president for International Exploration & Production, Philippe Mathieu, pointed out that producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a zone less exposed to Middle East tensions could be a comparative advantage for attracting new volumes to the Asian market.

The Tanzanian LNG project has been in development for over a decade and is considered the largest investment ever considered in the country. Equinor operates one of the offshore blocks where several natural gas discoveries have been made since the early 2010s, alongside ExxonMobil. The project's projected cost has followed an upward trajectory since initial estimates.

The signing of a framework agreement between the Tanzanian government and the international consortium remains pending, with negotiations having faced repeated delays over revenue sharing, taxation, and domestic market supply obligations. Despite a change in leadership at the Ministry of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, who succeeded Doto Biteko in November 2025, still needs to finalize the agreement.
