Ether's Sudden Surge Triggers Wave of Short Liquidations
Crypto markets experienced a brief rally on Friday, driven by fresh liquidations in bearish bets on Ether and Bitcoin. The prices of most digital assets spiked as financial markets were whipsawed by US economic reports and retreating oil prices.
Ether saw its largest intraday increase since three weeks ago, surging 8.3%, while Bitcoin increased by less than 4%. However, both tokens have since pulled back from their highs.
The recent market move suggests that prices are being driven more by speculation than actual demand. Traders have largely stayed on the sidelines since the August rally due to a lack of clear catalysts following the forced deleveraging.
Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet, noted that the recent range-bound trading 'looks like consolidation with fading short-term momentum rather than a confirmed structural breakdown.'
