EU Blames Russia for 'Weaponising Hunger' Against Global Food Security
The European Union's delegation to Ukraine has accused Russia of using food as a weapon in its ongoing war against Ukraine, claiming it is 'weaponising hunger' against millions worldwide.
Russia's attacks have severely impacted Ukraine's ability to export grain, with the country accounting for 15% of global maize exports, 10% of wheat exports, and 50% of sunflower oil exports before the invasion. However, Russia's actions have halved grain exports compared to last year.
The EU delegation states that if Ukraine loses its current harvest, which is already at risk due to lack of storage, the effects will be felt well into 2027. This would lead to food shortages in vulnerable regions such as Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
The international community must demand an immediate moratorium on strikes against grain infrastructure and ports, safe passage for commercial vessels, and a full ceasefire leading to just and lasting peace, according to the EU delegation.
