EU Countries Seek Tax on Oil Companies' War Profits
EU member states are calling for a tax on oil companies due to their increased profits from the war in the Middle East. Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, and Spain have requested that the EU consider taxing exceptional profits made by oil companies.
The finance ministers sent a letter to Ireland's finance minister, who holds the rotating presidency of the EU, requesting that this topic be included on the agenda for next month's meeting in Dublin.
They argue that oil company profitability exceeds the increase in oil prices and global dissatisfaction with living costs is rising. The ministers suggest discussing taxing exceptional profits based on lessons learned from similar measures implemented after Ukraine's invasion in 2022.
