EU Countries Urge Windfall Tax on Oil Companies Amid Soaring Profits
Six European countries are calling for a bloc-wide windfall tax on oil companies due to soaring profits caused by the Middle East war. The finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, and Portugal, along with Spain's economy minister, sent a joint letter to Ireland's finance minister, who holds the current EU presidency.
The letter states that 'oil companies are enjoying overall profitability and margins on refined products that exceed the rise in crude oil prices.' It also notes that 'we are experiencing one of the biggest supply shocks in decades, and all over the world there is growing discontent about the rise in the cost of living.'
The move comes as European countries face rising energy costs due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The six countries argue that a windfall tax would be necessary to mitigate the impact on consumers.
