EU Explores Options for Ukraine Grain Exports Amid Global Food Security Concerns

The European Union is exploring all possible options to support grain exports from Ukraine, according to EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen. In an interview with Bloomberg, Hansen noted that the EU has a crucial role in global food security as a major agri-food exporter.

Hansen stated that lower EU production would inevitably lead to shortages elsewhere in the world. The EU is engaged in ongoing discussions with Ukraine and its neighbors to facilitate exports, including via 'solidarity lanes'. However, these efforts are being complicated by low water levels on the Danube.

The European Commission is working with member countries to mitigate the impact of extreme summer heat and drought on farmers. Hansen has urged governments to quickly assess available tools and flexibilities under the bloc's Common Agricultural Policy, which could include invoking force majeure for some farmers or easing funding requirements.
