EU Gas Demand Plummets as Heat Pumps and Renewables Take Hold
The European Union has seen a significant reduction in gas demand due to the aggressive deployment of heat pumps and renewable energy sources. According to an analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, achieving existing clean energy targets by 2030 will slash EU gas demand by 25 percent. This is attributed to the rapid expansion of solar and wind infrastructure, as well as the installation of 1.1 million residential heat pumps in Germany between 2022 and 2025.
These installations have permanently removed 40 terawatt-hours of cumulative natural gas demand from the grid, saving an estimated €1.3 billion (KES 182 billion) over three years. The financial savings compound annually over the lifespan of the equipment, severing households' exposure to volatile global commodity markets.
The European Commission's REPowerEU initiative and Electrification Action Plan aim to drive the bloc's electrification rate to 46 percent by 2040, with 70 percent of EU electricity currently generated from homegrown clean sources. However, the overall electrification rate of final energy demand has stalled at just 23 percent for a decade.
