EU Gas Prices Soar as Middle East Tensions Intensify LNG Security Concerns
The European natural gas market has seen its prices surge to near EUR63 due to rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over liquefied natural gas (LNG) security ahead of winter. The conflict between the US and Iran, with both countries downplaying the possibility of peace negotiations, has increased the likelihood of sustained disruptions to energy exports from the region.
The United States and Iran have been exchanging strikes, while Iran-backed Houthi militants have also joined in, targeting two Saudi Arabian tankers in the Red Sea. This has reduced LNG shipments from the Persian Gulf, intensifying competition with Asian buyers, and driving up electricity demand due to high temperatures across Europe.
Equinor, Europe's largest gas supplier, has cautioned that the bloc is unlikely to meet its 80% gas storage target before the heating season, leaving the market more susceptible to significant price swings when colder weather arrives.
