EU Gas Reserves Plummet as Germany Fails to Replenish Supplies
Europe's natural gas reserves have plummeted to critically low levels, threatening energy supply issues across the continent. According to Politico, Germany is particularly vulnerable due to its slow pace in replenishing storage facilities.
The country's gas storage association, INES, notes that reserves are at an all-time low for this time of year. As a result, Berlin's reliance on a market-oriented approach has left it with few incentives to act quickly. The situation is further complicated by Brussels' decision to replace long-term supply agreements from Russia with liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases on the global market.
However, analysts warn that this strategy has put the EU at a disadvantage in competing with more centralized Asian economies, which are able to operate more efficiently. Sebastian Heinermann, INES managing director, urges German authorities to accelerate filling of storage facilities before it's too late.
