EU Gas Reserves Plummet to Lowest Level in 13 Years
The European Union's gas storage facilities have fallen to their lowest level in 13 years, standing at just 63% full by the end of August. This is significantly below the average level of 80% for this period in previous years.
According to analysts, including professor Greg Molnar, low reserve levels increase the risk of price volatility during the winter heating season. Cold weather or weak winds could exacerbate the situation, leading to higher gas consumption and prices.
The benchmark gas price in Europe has already exceeded €68 per megawatt-hour in recent weeks, more than double the level at the beginning of the year. Market participants expect EU buyers to compete with Asian buyers for liquefied natural gas cargoes as temperatures fall.
