EU Gas Storage Crisis Deepens as Winter Looms

The European Union is facing a severe gas storage crunch ahead of the heating season, with current inventory levels at their lowest in 17 years. The crisis has been exacerbated by the EU's reliance on US liquefied natural gas (LNG) and Qatar, which have both dried up. The sanctions against Russia will only worsen the situation when they come into effect next year, banning all Russian LNG imports.

European countries are competing with Asian buyers for a limited supply of LNG, driving prices to twice their pre-2023 levels. The US has promised new export capacity in the coming years, but it won't be enough to alleviate the current crisis. European governments may be forced to intervene and order gas traders to buy more LNG, prompting a bidding war with other importers.

The EU's energy consumers are already paying high prices for electricity, and the impending winter will only exacerbate the problem. The region's storage caverns need to be refilled urgently to meet demand, which is expected to surge up to twofold in the coming months.
