EU Imports More Russian Gas Despite Phase-Out Pledge

The European Union (EU) has seen a significant increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia, despite its goal to reduce dependence on Russian gas. According to recent reports, EU countries imported 14% more LNG from Russia in June compared to the same month last year.

Russia's revenues from LNG sales reached approximately €60 million per day in June, with France being the largest importer of LNG from Russia during this period. The port of Montoir in northwestern France received four times more Russian gas in June than in May.

Interestingly, EU countries have already received 136 cargoes from Russia's Yamal LNG project in the first half of 2026, with a total volume of around 10 million tonnes, a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. This development seems to contradict the EU's aim to completely phase out Russian gas and LNG by 2027.
