EU Imports of Russian LNG Rise Despite Plans to Phase Out Russian Gas
The European Union's imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) saw a significant increase in June, rising by 14% compared to the same month last year. This surge comes despite plans to phase out Russian gas from the EU market.
Russia's daily revenues from raw material sales reached around €60 million ($69.3 million), with France being the largest buyer of Russian LNG. In June, LNG deliveries to the French port of Montoir-de-Bretagne were four times higher than in May.
The EU's efforts to reduce its dependence on Moscow have been ongoing since 2022, when the bloc approved regulations aimed at gradually phasing out Russian LNG and pipeline gas imports. However, Russian natural gas still accounted for 13.4% of the EU's total gas imports in the second quarter of this year.
