EU Ministers Demand Windfall Tax on Oil Companies
European Union finance ministers from five countries have written a joint letter to their Irish counterpart, pushing for an EU tax on windfall profits made by oil companies. The move aims to address the growing discontent over rising living costs and fuel shortages.
The letter was signed by finance ministers from Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, and Spain's economy minister. They want the issue of a profit tax to be included in the agenda for the September meeting of EU finance ministers in Dublin.
Germany's Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has stated that energy companies should not 'rip off' their consumers during this crisis. The ministers argue that countries are facing one of the most severe fuel supply crises in recent decades, with oil shipments from the Persian Gulf region averaging around 15 million barrels per day.
