EU Natural Gas Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Tensions and Energy Disruptions
European natural gas prices have reached their highest level since January 2023, holding above €68/MWh. This increase is due to concerns over disruptions in energy supplies from the Persian Gulf, exacerbated by fresh US measures against Iran. The US Treasury has announced expanded secondary sanctions targeting Iran's digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping sectors.
The sanctions also impose new penalties on 60 entities, individuals, and vessels allegedly involved in generating oil revenues for Iran, procuring weapons, and supporting cyber operations. These developments add to already elevated supply risks in Europe, where the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has constrained LNG deliveries from Qatar.
Combining these factors with stronger cooling demand amid persistent heatwaves, it's becoming increasingly difficult for Europe to rebuild gas inventories ahead of winter. This heightens fears that the region could enter the heating season with insufficient supplies.
