EU Spends Record €7.28 Billion on Russian Arctic Gas Amid War of Words
European countries have spent a record €7.28 billion on liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia's Arctic Yamal project in just over eight months this year, surpassing their total expenditure for all of 2025.
This figure was revealed by an investigation conducted by Urgewald, a non-governmental organization that exposes financial institutions and companies involved in climate-damaging projects.
According to the findings, European ports received 156 Yamal LNG cargoes carrying 11.39 million tonnes between January and August this year, which is a 10.1% increase from the same period in 2025.
The EU's heavy reliance on Russian gas is attributed to higher European gas prices and increased cargo volumes due to disruptions in energy trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz caused by the war in the Middle East.
