Europe Braces for Diesel Shortage as War and Sanctions Bite
Europe is facing a serious diesel fuel shortage this winter due to several factors. The war in the Middle East, damage to oil refining facilities in the Persian Gulf countries, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries are all contributing to the shortage.
The global diesel market has already deteriorated significantly, with supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, damage to refineries in the Persian Gulf countries, and Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil infrastructure limiting exports from regions that last year accounted for about one-third of global diesel supplies.
Europe is particularly vulnerable due to its lack of domestic oil refining capacity and heavy reliance on imported diesel fuel. 'Europe has a huge problem with diesel,' said Eugene Lindell, head of the petroleum products division at FGE NexantECA. 'The situation will become very difficult, and we will likely see extremely high prices.'
Diesel is critical to the economy, used by the automotive sector, industry, construction, and heating systems. Rising diesel prices could fuel inflation even if oil prices remain stable.
