Europe Braces for Energy Crisis as LNG Market Tightens Ahead of Winter
Europe's energy supply is facing significant challenges ahead of winter as conflicts in the Middle East and Russia have tightened the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market, pushing inventories down to worrying levels.
The region relies heavily on LNG to meet its heating needs, with natural gas accounting for around 30% and heating oil contributing about 10% of household heating demand.
After several years of energy market shocks, Europe is preparing for winter under significant pressure in both markets. The reliance on LNG has increased sharply since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, leaving the region exposed to global market fluctuations.
LNG imports have fallen sharply since the Iran conflict began, with July imports expected to reach just 6.3 million metric tonnes, the lowest level since September 2024, according to Kpler data.
