Europe Braces for Gas-Driven Price Spikes as Winter Looms
Europe's gas reserves are running low as the continent enters the heating season. According to calculations, Europe still needs over 100 terawatt-hours of natural gas to reach its lowest storage target of 75%. This would require an injection pace not seen since the 2022 energy crisis.
The European Union economies are unlikely to run out of gas, but low inventory levels heading into winter leave them susceptible to price spikes. Even a mild start to winter courtesy of El Niño could quickly give way to cold snaps boosting heating demand.
Aggressive buying by China, pipeline outages, or disruptions to US liquified natural gas supply chains could tighten the market further. Current prices held steady after surging 10% over the last three days.
