Europe Faces 'Big Winter Price Spike' as Gas Prices Hit Three-Year High
Gas prices in Europe have surged to a three-year high, reaching €75 per megawatt hour, as Britain's gas reserves have fallen to their lowest level in the region.
The current storage facilities are only 31% full, with around three terawatt hours of gas stored. In contrast, Germany has around 131 gigawatt hours in storage, more than 40 times the amount held by Britain.
Analysts warn that prices could rise further as countries rush to refill their storage facilities before winter, with Montel Analytics predicting a potential 19% increase over the colder months.
David Lewis of Wood Mackenzie cautioned that low storage levels and continued tightness in the global LNG market leave Europe with little buffer against supply disruptions or demand spikes.
