Europe Seeks Non-Russian Gas Through Türkiye Amid Energy Crisis
Türkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that European countries are seeking to purchase gas routed through Türkiye, but not originating from Russia. This comes as part of a broader plan to supply natural gas to 16 million households by 2028 and expand the country's role as a regional oil and gas transit hub.
According to Bayraktar, Turkish officials have been approached by European counterparts who want to buy gas other than Russian gas through Türkiye. He stated that the country's annual gas consumption capacity stands at about 60 billion cubic meters, but recent infrastructure investment has expanded this capability to 70-80 billion cubic meters.
Turkish officials are discussing whether it is possible to export domestically produced gas from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea. Bayraktar added that when gas of undetermined origin enters Türkiye's system, Turkish authorities are required to document which country the gas belongs to.
