Europe Sets Record for Spending on Russian LNG Amid Energy Market Shifts

Europe has set a record for spending on Russian LNG this year, with €7.3 billion already spent between January and August. The total of 156 shipments from 'Yamal LNG' amounts to 11.39 million tonnes, exceeding last year's total by 10.1 percent. According to analytics firm Kpler, European ports received 88.9 percent of all Russian LNG exported from Yamal LNG in the first eight months and five days of this year.

The increase in expenditure is attributed to high gas prices in Europe, increased supply volumes, and disruption to a key energy route through the Strait of Hormuz due to the Middle East war. A significant proportion of supplies is delivered under long-term contracts, while imports under short-term agreements were banned by the EU in April.

Kpler analyst Charles Costerruz notes that European buyers are ramping up purchases ahead of the ban on Russian LNG imports set to come into force in January 2027. The EU's total expenditure on Russian LNG for last year has already been exceeded, driven by a combination of factors.
