European Copper Supply Gets a Policy Boost
Copper prices have risen alongside gold as the US dollar weakens, and this trend is not just about metals markets. European policymakers are increasingly framing domestic mining as a strategic priority, rather than just a commercial activity.
The continent consumes more copper than it produces, with imports from countries with higher political and logistical risks making up the gap. Critical minerals legislation aims to change this balance by encouraging domestic extraction, processing, and recycling capacity.
This shift in policy alters how operating mines within the European Union are regarded. Permitting and environmental performance remain challenging, but mines inside the bloc benefit from proximity to smelters, established infrastructure, and increasingly favorable regulatory frameworks.
