European Gas Prices Edge Higher Amid LNG Supply Concerns and Storage Fears
European natural gas prices have edged higher due to concerns over liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply security and Europe's ability to refill gas storage ahead of winter. The benchmark August contract at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), Europe's most liquid virtual gas trading hub, traded at €61.80 per megawatt-hour (MWh) on Friday morning.
The escalating tensions between the US and Iran have heightened concerns over LNG supply security to Europe and raised doubts over whether the region will be able to replenish gas inventories to targeted levels before the winter heating season.
Equinor Chief Executive Anders Opedal warned that European Union gas storage sites were unlikely to reach their target of 80% full, with current levels at just 54.61%. This has left the market more vulnerable to sharp price swings when colder weather arrives.
