European Gas Prices Fall Amid Diplomatic Efforts to Reopen Hormuz
Natural gas prices in Europe declined nearly 4% on Wednesday, as ongoing diplomatic efforts between Iran and Oman raised hopes for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The benchmark September contract at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), Europe's most liquid virtual gas trading hub, traded at €64 per megawatt-hour (MWh) at 10.15 a.m. local time (0715 GMT), down 3.9% from Tuesday's close of €66.59 per MWh.
Prices had surged nearly 4% on Monday to their highest level since January 2023 as the US launched a sweeping campaign to isolate Iran from the global financial system, raising fears of further disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies.
The agreement between Iran and Oman includes establishing a temporary seven-mile-wide transit route through the Strait of Hormuz, with further negotiations planned over the next 30 to 60 days to determine a permanent route and future arrangements for passage through the strategic waterway.
