European Gas Prices Plummet as Trump-Iran Talks Ease Geopolitical Tensions
European natural gas prices continued their decline on Tuesday, reaching one-week lows as crude oil markets fell and diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran reduced geopolitical tensions.
The Dutch front-month contract at the hub, the European natural gas benchmark, dropped 1% to trade at its lowest level in over a week, while Britain's equivalent wholesale gas contract mirrored the continental slide with a 1.5% decline.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs warned that near-term risks to European gas prices remain skewed to the upside due to low regional storage levels and sluggish recovery in Middle East LNG exports.
The continued downfall in gas futures tracked a parallel retreat in global oil markets, with Brent crude touching its lowest level in over a week. Market sentiment was influenced by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that Washington was engaged in 'good talks' with Iran and suggested there was a tangible chance for a diplomatic resolution to recent Middle East military friction.
However, energy desks remained cautious as Trump added that U.S. military strikes would resume if negotiations failed to yield a concrete agreement, placing a floor under deep downside moves in energy commodities.
