European Gas Prices Retreat from Recent Highs Amid Eased LNG Disruption Fears

European gas prices have retreated from recent highs as fears of major LNG supply disruptions in the Middle East eased. The benchmark front-month contract at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) traded at around €40 per megawatt-hour (MWh) before the conflict but surged above €60 per MWh in late July on concerns that LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could be disrupted.

The rally reflected expectations of tighter global LNG supplies at a time when Europe was refilling gas storage ahead of winter. Concerns over potential disruptions to Qatari LNG exports also raised fears that Europe would face stronger competition from Asian buyers for spot cargoes.

According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Gas Market Report, developments around the Strait of Hormuz have increased uncertainty over global gas supply security, with LNG-importing regions particularly exposed to potential disruptions. However, expectations grew that Qatari LNG exports could gradually resume following diplomatic contacts between the US and Iran, helping TTF prices retreat to around €55 per MWh.

Energy consultancy Energy Aspects argues that the market 'has become overly optimistic,' saying the key issue for Europe is no longer how quickly LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz recover, but whether gas storage will be sufficiently replenished before the winter heating season. Analysts say any sustained decline in European gas prices will depend less on easing geopolitical tensions than on whether Europe can rebuild gas inventories before winter.
