European Gas Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
The European gas market has seen a significant surge in prices, reaching its highest level in over three years. The Dutch front-month TTF futures price surged to around €73.85 per megawatt-hour on September 2, a 25% increase from the past month.
This rise is largely attributed to concerns over LNG supplies moving through the Strait of Hormuz due to renewed U.S.-Iran fighting.
Meanwhile, in contrast, the U.S. natural gas market has seen prices fall. The Henry Hub price dropped to around $2.86 per million British thermal units on September 1, largely due to record domestic production and forecasts for milder weather.
The widening gap between European and U.S. gas prices may become one of the most significant consequences of the latest Middle East energy shock.
