European Gas Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
European natural gas prices have surged as tensions in the Middle East disrupt Qatari LNG exports. QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure to the end of September, affecting buyers in Asia and Europe. The company is also looking to subcharter an LNG carrier until October due to ongoing disruptions.
EU LNG imports are set to fall by over 25% year-on-year in July, making it harder to refill storage ahead of winter. EU gas storage levels are currently at 56%, below the 10-year seasonal average of 72%. The heatwaves sweeping Europe will further complicate injections into storage.
As a result, analysts expect tighter-than-usual storage at the start of the heating season, leading to elevated gas prices with potential spikes through the winter. This suggests that consumers should be prepared for higher energy costs in the coming months.
