European Gas Prices Soar on Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The recent escalation in military tensions between the US and Iran has sent shockwaves through European gas markets, driving prices to their highest level since March.
The benchmark Dutch front-month contract rose by 3.15 euros to 70.10 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), topping the 70-euro threshold for the first time in over five months, as fears of supply disruptions and prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz weighed on prices.
The Strait, a critical transit corridor for liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from Qatar, is particularly sensitive due to its role in carrying approximately 20% of global LNG flows.
The sudden price surge has injected renewed cost-push inflation fears across European industrial sectors, complicating the economic picture for the European Central Bank as it prepares for its September 10 monetary policy meeting.
