European Gas Prices Soar Past Eight-Year High Amid US-Iran Tensions
European natural gas prices have reached their highest level since January 2023, breaching €80 per megawatt-hour on Wednesday afternoon. This sudden surge has had a ripple effect on stock exchanges across Europe, with the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (AEX) closing with significant losses.
The conflict between the United States and Iran is largely responsible for the increase in gas prices, as well as oil prices, which have climbed past $100 a barrel. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy shipping route, has been nearly entirely blocked due to ongoing fighting.
In addition to the tension with Iran, conflicts between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels in Yemen have also escalated, further complicating global trade. As a result, gas prices under standard energy contracts have risen by more than 6 percent in August compared to July, while year-over-year prices are up over 11 percent.
