European Gas Prices Soar to Record High Amid Middle East Tensions
Natural gas prices on European exchanges have surged to a record high, reaching levels not seen since December 23, 2022. The Dutch TTF index, Europe's largest gas trading hub, saw October futures rise by 3.2% to hit $950 per thousand cubic meters.
This increase followed an opening rise of 2.9% to $937.7, up from the previous session's closing price of $911.5. Benchmark futures have also reached their highest levels since January 2023, posting gains of approximately 8% since last Friday.
The surge in gas prices is driven by escalating military tensions in the Middle East and their direct impact on global energy supply flows. Bottlenecks in energy corridors play a key role in the current crisis, with ongoing disruptions causing a severe shortage in global supplies.
