European Gas Prices Spike Amid Persian Gulf Tensions and Low Storage Levels
European natural gas prices have surged by 1.83% to reach their highest point since July 24, fueled by escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf and critically low storage levels.
The Dutch benchmark front-month contracts advanced to 62.55 euros per megawatt-hour, while UK wholesale equivalents climbed over 2% to 154.01 pence per therm.
The increase follows a notable uptick in US diplomatic and military posturing toward Tehran over the weekend, with Washington signaling it might impose a complete naval blockade on Iranian ports if commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz stays constrained.
This has led market participants to embed a hefty geopolitical risk premium, further dimming hopes for a quick transit deal and postponing vital spot deliveries bound for European terminals.
