European Gas Reserves Fall Short Amid Global Energy Headwinds

European gas reserves in storage are currently 17% below their five-year average, according to the European Gas Infrastructure Operators Association (GIE). Despite a recent uptick in injections, the current reserves are significantly lower than usual. The main reasons for this discrepancy include the worsening situation in the Middle East, which has led to restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Additionally, calm weather has reduced output from wind power plants, forcing European countries to increase their use of natural gas for energy supply. This is further complicated by an anticipated reduction in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies in August, which poses a risk to the energy sector of the European Union.

Currently, the total active capacity of underground gas storage facilities in the EU is 109 billion cubic meters. The situation highlights the need for diversification and contingency planning in the face of global events that can impact energy supplies.
