European Gas Reserves Plummet to Decade Low Ahead of Winter

European countries face an uncertain winter as they head into the season with the lowest gas reserves in over a decade. The European Union's gas storage capacity is currently at around 63%, significantly below the average of about 80% for this time of year, according to The Guardian. This low level of inventory increases the risk of greater price volatility over the winter, as warned by gas analyst Greg Molnar.

The European gas market was relatively quiet during the summer, with traders anticipating increased flows of liquefied natural gas before winter. However, the problems with filling gas supplies have intensified due to the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has severely disrupted oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf region. Additionally, last winter's cold weather reduced gas supplies, while summer heat waves increased the use of gas-fired power plants.

While a physical shortage of gas in Europe is not yet expected this winter, markets are bracing for significantly higher prices. The European reference gas price has exceeded 68 euros per megawatt hour, more than double the level at the beginning of the year. Goldman Sachs analysts estimate that unless normal gas exports from the Middle East return, the European price may have to rise above 100 euros per megawatt hour to attract enough liquefied natural gas for winter consumption.
