This year's European grain production is expected to drop by 9% compared to last year, reaching 23.4 million tons, according to estimates from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit. The main reason behind this decline is the abnormal heat wave that has affected many countries in Europe, including France, Germany, and Poland. In particular, France's corn production has plummeted by 30% since May, while wheat production has decreased by 8%. However, the quality of French wheat remains high.

Germany's winter wheat production will also decline by 12% due to premature grain ripening. On the other hand, Romania and Bulgaria are expected to have a good harvest season thanks to sufficient rainfall. In fact, Romania plans to harvest almost record yields of wheat, barley, and rapeseed, while Bulgaria expects a record harvest of wheat with lower-than-normal protein content.

The ongoing war in the Middle East has also contributed to the decline in grain production by increasing fuel and fertilizer prices, forcing farmers to reduce the area sown. Additionally, risks to shipping in the Black Sea and the threat of the El Niño climate phenomenon have added to the uncertainty surrounding this year's harvest.
