European Natural Gas Prices Soar Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict
The price of natural gas in Europe has reached its highest level in nearly two years, exceeding 79 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh) for the first time since December 2022. The October-delivery futures contract at the virtual Title Transfer Facility (TTF) trading hub in the Netherlands showed a 3.6 percent increase to 78.55 euros per MWh by around 13:30 CEST.
The recent surge is attributed to the worsening situation in the Middle East, where Iran has launched attacks on US and Israeli targets. The escalating conflict has disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil and natural gas supplies.
Natural gas prices have been volatile since the start of the war with Iran, briefly climbing above 70 euros per MWh in March. The current price is higher than at any point during this period.
