European Shares Slip as Oil Prices Surge and Bond Yields Rise
European shares have taken a hit as rising oil prices and surging euro zone bond yields weigh on investor sentiment. The pan-European STOXX 600 index dropped by 0.2% to 654.81 at 0703 GMT.
Rising crude prices are the main driver behind this decline, with Brent crude climbing about 0.6% to $91.41 a barrel. Energy stocks, however, bucked the trend and rose by 0.6%.
The escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran has pushed oil prices higher, stoking fears that elevated energy costs could keep inflation high. Investors are also concerned that governments may need to increase defense spending, adding to borrowing requirements and pushing up bond yields even further.
The combination of rising energy prices, higher borrowing costs, and geopolitical uncertainty is putting pressure on European equities. Investors are closely watching developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on inflation and economic growth.
