European Vegetable Supply Under Siege as Heatwaves and Droughts Bite
Europe's vegetable supply is facing an unprecedented crisis due to repeated heatwaves and droughts. The problem is not just about high temperatures, but also the prolonged lack of rainfall that has depleted soil moisture and water reserves.
In France, losses range from 25% to 100% for different vegetables, with broccoli yields falling by half and lettuce prices surging. Britain's growers are also reporting significant damage, with wholesale prices for iceberg lettuce being around 90% higher than normal.
The drought has created a feedback loop for agriculture, where dry soil means crops begin a heatwave already stressed. High temperatures increase evaporation and the plants' water requirements, leading to further pressure on rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater.
