Europe's Energy Lifeline: Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Gains Momentum

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project is set to become one of Europe's most significant energy sources. The ambitious pipeline will stretch from Nigeria through Niger and Algeria, connecting two major gas powers.

Algeria, a key natural gas supplier to Europe, has been increasing its exports to the EU, with 40 billion cubic meters of gas exported in 2025, accounting for around 14% of Europe's total gas imports. However, domestic demand is also growing rapidly due to population growth and industrial development.

The TSGP project aims to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, with the Algerian section being the longest at 2,424 km. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Nigerien Petroleum Products Company (SONIDEP), and Sonatrach are jointly developing the pipeline.

Europe continues to seek suppliers that are closer, more predictable, and less dependent on maritime risks than traditional importers. The TSGP project strengthens the EU's diplomatic ties with its African partners and provides an alternative to Russian and Middle Eastern gas supplies.
