Europe's Energy System Buckles Under Record Heatwave
Europe's energy system is facing significant challenges due to an extreme heatwave and drought. Refineries are struggling to maintain cooling efficiency, nuclear power generation is being cut back, hydroelectric output is falling, and inland fuel transport is becoming more expensive.
The prolonged drought has shrunk rivers, dried out soils, and fueled destructive wildfires across southern and central Europe. Temperatures above 40°C have become increasingly common in the region, with human-driven climate change exacerbating these extreme weather events.
Historically, seasonal temperature changes affected energy prices as heating and cooling demand fluctuated. However, commodity analysts at Standard Chartered noted that extreme heat and drought are now impacting refiners' ability to produce fuels efficiently, amplifying pressure on refinery margins and diesel cracks during the summer months.
The ICE gasoil-Brent crude crack exceeded $75 per barrel on July 31, close to a 20-year high, with further upside possible if conditions worsen. Europe's refineries were mainly built in the 1960s and 1970s and are poorly equipped for modern summer heatwaves.
