Europe's Gas Prices Soar Amid Renewed Mideast Tensions
European natural gas prices jumped by 5% on Monday morning to their highest level since January 2023. The benchmark price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) surged past 70 euros, or $81.20 per megawatt-hour (MWh), amid heightened market concerns over LNG supply from the Middle East.
The escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran has intensified fears about LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Although oil flows have rebounded in recent weeks, LNG traffic remains at a standstill due to security concerns.
Europe is facing one of its lowest gas storage levels in two decades, exacerbating competition for global LNG supplies ahead of the winter season. The war in the Middle East has already disrupted LNG shipments from Qatar, sending prices soaring in Europe and Asia.
