Europe's Gas Prices Soar as Middle East Tensions Bite
Europe's natural gas prices are on track for their fourth consecutive weekly gain, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and a shrinking pool of global supply. The re-escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran has intensified concerns about LNG flows from the Strait of Hormuz.
The front-month price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), the benchmark for Europe's gas trading, is up 7% this week alone. This surge in prices comes as Asia's spot LNG price also surged to its highest level since 2022, further tightening global gas markets.
Europe is heading into winter with one of the lowest levels of gas in storage in the past two decades, exacerbated by the war in the Middle East and the absence of Qatari LNG from the market. Analysts warn that competition for readily available global LNG cargoes will intensify, particularly if Qatari LNG remains absent through year-end.
