Europe's Gas Prices Soar on Escalating Middle East Tensions
Europe's natural gas prices surged by 6% on Monday morning in Amsterdam as oil prices rallied due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The front-month price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) reached $97.31 per megawatt-hour (MWh), surpassing January 2023 levels when Europe faced a winter without most of Russia's pipeline gas supply.
Gas prices have been rising for five consecutive weeks, and European storage sites are less than 70% full compared to 82% at this time last year. The low storage levels and increased competition for LNG cargoes due to the war in the Middle East have driven up prices. Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, said that 'the disruption has forced buyers in Europe and Asia to compete more aggressively for alternative cargoes and has helped push European natural gas above USD 140 per barrel equivalent.'
Go Katayama, principal insight analyst for LNG at intelligence firm Kpler, warned of a potential 'global 'fight for fuel' particularly in a colder winter.
